Target audience

The target audience for accessibility is not people with disabilities. Accessibility concerns everyone. If accessibility is good it goes unnoticed. If it is bad some of us will be entirely excluded from the information, some will have serious problems reading and understanding it and the rest will be rather annoyed.

The notions of what counts as dyslexia varies and many who suffer from vision impairment do not even want to be considered disabled. Whiplash injuries, repetitive strain injuries and attention deficits as a result of medication are other problems that are hard to define. They affect people’s ability to understand digital information.

Add to that a steadily ageing population and everyone with different native tongues and the large number of Internet users that are not considered average, the number of people who benefit from accessibility just keeps growing. Within the EU there are about 37 million people with disabilities. But most people who surf the Internet on a daily basis come across accessibility issues, no matter if they are good or bad.
